Software Engineer considering a switch

I've recently graduated (UK) with a Software Engineering degree and really do enjoy my work, however after being in education all my life I've started to get an itch to learn again, and figured as I work in a bank, finance would be the best thing to satiate my appetite.

I am intrigued by Economics and Finance and as a relatively materialistic soul am starting to already see the ceiling in my career.

I'm hoping to gain enough insight through this website and my current employer over the next year to make some serious decisions with my life, I am 23 this week and am looking for some guidance, and also perhaps a reality-check to confirm if this industry is where I potentially belong!

I think it's brilliant what you guys are doing here, and I hope to give back as well as take!

Anyone from the UK made a switch from Programming into Finance, and if so - why?
