Soon to be veteran starting a career in finance

Hey all,

I will be separating from the Navy after 6 years of service as a Nuclear Electronics Technician/Reactor Operator (E-5). I have been stationed on the USS Enterprise for the last four years and did two Gulf tours.

I'm originally from New York (Westchester), and due to my interest in finance, I felt like it would be best to return to the Big Apple to start my career.

I have been accepted into New York's Fordham University, where I will start my first batch of summer classes in May '14. My intention is to transfer into Fordham's Gabelli School of Business to receive my undergraduate degree in finance.

Because the GI bill will be paying for my education (along with a housing stipend), I really feel that I have a great opportunity to intern/volunteer for the majority of my free time.

I guess my only question is, where should I look? Because I don't have a degree, I think that most analyst internships are above me. I plan to be active in the school's veteran community, however I would like something that is also more related to finance. So far, the only lead that I've got is to be a BAT Ambassador (Bloomberg Aptitude Test), basically a representative for the BAT at Fordham. I really am looking for something that will look good on my resume, and that I can work hard at to gain precious experience.

All thoughts, comments and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and glad to be part of the community!

David

what made you choose Fordham over Columbia or NYU if you want to go into finance?

I would suggest trying to get into either of those schools as internships and full time hiring will be much easier. Both are yellow ribbon schools as well.

I am a navy vet myself so if you want to talk let me know. I know a few good programs geared toward vets and would be more than willing to share my experience with them. you are a lot more prepared than I was when I went thought everything.
