UK grad now studying master in Hong Kong

Hey, would like to introduce myself and seek advise from people working in Hong Kong, can also answer questions for people interested in this region.

I graduated from a Russell Group university in England with a high 2.1 and decided to study a master at one of the good universities in HK. I have a couple summer research internships from not-so-well-known firms. I love Hong Kong and I am looking to find a job here once I graduate this year, or if that fails, back in London. I am not Asian and I can only speak English.

For people that have got into graduate positions or solid internships in HK, with a similar background to me what advice would you give me? I was quite successful in landing interviews in London but not here.

It really depends on what you area you are aiming for. If you're looking at stuff like Investment Banking/PE, Equity Research or Asset Management, then language sadly is probably extremely important. Most business is done with mainland China so business proficiency in Mandarin Chinese is basically a requirement. Now there are guys who don't know Chinese but know a second language like Hindi, Korean or Bahasa which enable them to succeed in finance because they can work in coverage groups that require that language. And the western foreign guys who are here usually didn't start here. They gained experience in NY, London etc and transferred here because they have good experience and a expertise in their field.

I'm sure the others can offer more advice but basically you're going to have to show the interviewer you have something that the other graduates (either locals or Chinese who studied overseas and are bilingual) cannot offer.

try to learn mandarin, can't really get any kind of good job in hk without it what are you studying at themoment? maybe that would help us give you advice
