100 Men vs 1 Gorilla
I’ve been seeing this circulate on Twitter and was curious what the thoughts of the finance community thinks. Assume the 100 men are average size (say, 5’10”, 180 lbs) but have no weapons. The gorilla is a fully grown silverback (~400 lbs, full strength).
Some thoughts:
- Gorillas are absurdly strong, estimates range from 6x to 10x human strength pound-for-pound. A single swipe could cripple a man.
- 100 is a lot of bodies. Even if the gorilla mauls a few at a time, eventually pure numbers could overwhelm it.
- Human coordination matters: if they can rush simultaneously, pin the limbs, and sacrifice a few bodies, we could probably defeat it.
- Without a perfect charge and some sacrifice, the gorilla could easily pick us off individually or in small groups.
Leaning 60/40 in favor towards 100 men if they swarm immediately and accept heavy casualties. Otherwise, gorilla wins
I study fight science and 100 men would overpower a 400lb Silverback. I honestly think a rear naked choke would be the most effective way to put him down. You only used the word "win" and not "kill," so a bit unsure of what you're asking but I think "defeat" is a proper word. There is debate in the fight community if you could rear naked choke a gorilla, but if you go through like 40 men, the gorilla is going to be dead tired, I think tired enough to rear naked choke it. Hopefully the neck isn't too big. But, yeah 100 men win.
I can’t imagine getting the chance to rear naked choke that thing, you’d be getting side-swiped away and some broken limbs in process. But that seemingly is the best way to go about it, any other type of head-to-head is nonsensical as their bones and muscles are dense as hell to hurt gorillas.
Exactly. Just imagine you attempting a rear naked choke and a gorilla grabs your head and arms. Try to convince me you wouldn’t let go.
Fair points, I lean heavily into the statement about humans being rattled by seeing their comrades being squished into oblivion. The gorilla wins the mental game every day of the week unless the 100 men are ancient Samurai. Not sure I agree with the race points though.
Blue whale?
Idk they are known for their ferocity and predatory prowess. That one could be tough. If the fight's on land I think the men still got this if they go for the eyes and blowhole. Swimming away is a forfeit!
not true. I doubt 100 men could take on a single rhino.
My tea says otherwise
Fully agree, I struggled to understand the counter argument. Even if you took a Strongman (e.g., Brian Shaw) as a proxy, 20-25 dudes would kick his ass and I doubt that a Silverback is 4-5x stronger than Shaw.
this is what unemployment leads to debating 100 men vs 1 gorilla on twitter
This is not the time to be pretentious; this has Socrates and Plato levels of discussion.
I'm surprised to see no one has asked the true question here yet. The true question is what is the breaking point of the Man to Gorilla ratio (Malcolm Gladwell approved).
100 to 1 : Man wins
100 to 10: Man wins?
100 to 50: Man loses
What is the breaking point? This is the true question, Socrates.
If we are talking about guys in finance gorilla wins easily every fucking time
100 nicotined-fueled, sleep-deprived, slightly chubby white guys can't beat a gorilla?
They watch the first guy get dismembered and play out the comps in their head. NPV isn't worth it homie.
bring the quant to run a Monte Carlo
I have arrived. I've run 14,00,605 scenarios. The finance bros only won once because the gorilla had a heart attack.
Some chick named Lily just took on 100 men and she wore them all out so
Link?
Imagine this, pretty soon there will be an AI model smart enough to simulate this and visualize the entire combat…
The AI programmer would have to write code regarding the LOI for each human - Level of Intensity. Out for the kill - 100% intensity. Don't want to be there - 10% intensity.
My man listening to Jocko
that's crazy! someone might get hurt
Just tell the other 99 to stay out of the way while I handle the situation.
user name checks out
I think you're not factoring in the loss of willpower and determination when the 99 see what the gorilla does to the first mf..
Reminds me of ...
Can prime Mike Tyson take on 100 prime Ariana Grande?
Prime MT could 1-hit delete 1,000 of them without breaking a sweat.
what about 100 men barebacking a silverback?
What exactly is the qualifier for victory here? Or is that just a line you really want to stand in?
This is a silly debate…
Gorillas are insanely strong (something like they lift 1500+ lbs), that’s besides the point… all 100 humans can’t attack the gorilla at once. It’s more like, 10 humans can attack the gorilla at once and it would piece them up one by one. Do you guys not remember that tiny macau monkey that tore that lady’s face apart?
I need you to understand how much mass 100 humans is
Redacted
Setting the line at ~5ish guys to eye gouge the gorilla. Then it’s screwed. Losing your sight is a sure-fire way to lose a battle, and I think the rest of the fellas could take it out after that with a few more casualties.
