$110 base, $130k total - is $2,500 in rent insane in NYC

Hi All,

24 and moving to NYC. I'm kinda in an awkard timing where all my friends are on a later lease schedle and would love to avoid having to move twice. That said, with an $110k base, $2,500 for a studio is defintiely steep but is it just New York or would I be an idiot to pay that much?

$2500 x 40 = $100K so you're good. If you're looking in Manhattan for a studio/1BR you will probably get a shoebox, but it is what it is.

For $2,500 in Manhattan, you will get either an OK studio apartment in an OK neighborhood, or a pretty shitty one in a nice neighborhood (UWS, UES, maybe Midtown). You can also look at Jersey City and LIC, apartments are generally cheaper and have great access to transportation.

$2500 is reasonable on your salary but the bigger issue is you won't get a very nice studio at all for that price (i.e. tiny, not nice at all apartment - even the LIC apartments are north of $3k these days) versus that will go pretty far with a roommate or two. If you can sublet or something you'll just get a way nicer unit if you can wait for your friends to move
