Accidentally recieved confidential email. What now?

Hi guys,

I applied for a job. Somehow a few hours later I received a mail with access to the data room of a current deal.

As there was no comment I opened the attachment as I thought I'd had to complete a test or something. I only realized once I opened that the aattachment that it was not intended for me.

What now?

So far I mailed them back and apologised for opening the attachment but I haven't heard anything back from them.

Just walk, the egg is on the emailer not you. You're fine.  If anything this helps you get the offer. They're at extra risk if they don't offer you a job here.  It looks bad if you get MNPI then they don't hire you.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

I can't promise you'll be hired but the sender's a lot more likely to be fired than any other option.

Take initiative and put together thoughtful analysis based on the information. Send your thoughts to the client and CC them. Also attach an invoice.

Just disregard it, or let the person who sent it (maybe not cc everyone else) know it came to the wrong recipient, but that they have nothing to worry about. Should be fine. I've sent an in-process CIM to the wrong person before and he just cracked a joke at me and my MD and that was pretty much the end of it.
