Advice on Downtown NYC Apartments

Hello, moving into NYC in July and searching for apartments right now. Looking for a 3 bedroom 1 bathroom in the western part of Downtown (West Village, Greenwich Village, Soho, Chelsea) or Hell’s kitchen. Roommate is gonna be going up to Columbia area, so we are looking for these areas so he only has to take the red line max 35 minutes. Otherwise we would be looking at other places in downtown.

We have a max price range of $1900/person ($5700) total.

Hell’s kitchen seems to have the best pricing and space for what we are looking for, but I know it is not the most fun area to live. Also have a place already that we are ready to put an offer in for in HK.

Obviously being down in Chelsea, GV, WV, or Soho will be cooler areas, but have seen on streeteasy that a majority of the places in these areas in our price range are kinda crappy, not as spacious, no living room, etc.

Considering these factors, is it worth it to forgo the place we have in Hell’s kitchen to find something in downtown, or do you think if we wait we’ll be able to find a nicer place downtown within our price range. Or will the places just be kinda small and crappy.

Also, we will be working/going to school so where we live will only really matter for the weekends, so considering this should we just live in HK.

thanks

3BD 2BA would be much better. Why are you looking for places with only one bathroom?

just because price

Don’t do it bro - 2BA is worth it with three people. Even a 4BR/2BA is better than a 3BR/1BA.

Also, I bet there is at least one of you who would be willing to pay extra rent for their own bathroom.

I don't think it's that unreasonable to have 1 BA. It will be hard to find a 3 bedroom in those neighborhoods at $5900 especially for anywhere nice (which would be frankly be mispriced). If you search diligently over the next few weeks you can def find something okay in those neighborhoods for $5900 but you have to ask yourself if you value the convenience of being close to downtown in a small kinda shitty apartment vs. more spacious / renovated Hell's Kitchen.
