Advice on WFH Setup

I just moved back home to my parents and will start working shortly (off-cycle). The one thing is I don't have my own room at home so I am working and sleeping in the living room.

I'm wondering if anyone is dealing with a similar situation. I am considering moving to my own place but the extra income could be helpful for my parents and moving in this quarantine environment doesn't seem like the most sensible move.

Would love to hear from you all if you had any similar experiences and what you did to deal with it.

i’m living with my parents too. same shit. consider yourself at work. there will always be distractions. just have headphones in at all times. get monitors and keyboard/mouse. start working earlier. as early as you can wake up to get work done while everyone is asleep. try to communicate nicely that noone should be talking to you all day except lunch time. you have fo disconnect from everything around you and you’ll be fine. get a table for your computer and make sure your chair is comfortable I still struggle With that. leave everything you need for work at that table so you don’t keep moving around and don’t forget to mute yourself during all calls. good luck

The poster above provided a pretty solid run down of things to look into. And I think moving during this pandemic probably won’t be smooth sailing.

Instead, use the money you’d get from your upcoming role to buy some good office essentials (e.g. a decent desk, good chair with support, a large enough monitor, keyboard/mouse, good noise cancelling headphones, etc). A startup firm Branch (which normally supplies to businesses) is offering discounts and free delivery of some office setups in parts of US and Canada. Not sure what your budget is, but that could be interesting. https://www.branchfurniture.com (and no, it’s not one of my portco’s).

Also echo having an upfront conversation to let your parents know you may not be able to talk (outside of lunch) to focus on work. Or heads up - sometimes you have calls or video meetings, and will need them to stay out of the living room. Communicate it earlier so there are no misunderstandings.

Lastly, does your family use the living room as the main room for entertainment/gathering? As in, is this where they spend more of their time? If so, is there another room you can use to work, or is it feasible to move the TV?
