AI use for Research/Finance

I am a senior in college who has recently accepted an internship with as an Equity Research analyst at a small hedgefund. I've primarily used ChatGPT in school but have heard otehr LLM, like Claude, are better in corporate enviroments. I wanted to know what models are people using and how people in the equity research/finance in general are using AI.

In equity research and finance, AI is increasingly being used as a "research assistant" to process and synthesize large amounts of data efficiently. Here's how AI is being applied in the field:

  1. Data Processing and Analysis: AI models, including machine learning (ML) and deep learning, are used for tasks like:

    • Running sentiment analysis on earnings call transcripts.
    • Extracting and analyzing data from alternative sources, such as satellite imagery (e.g., counting cars in parking lots) or scanned documents.
    • Quantitative stock screening using ML models trained on years of fundamental data.
  2. Portfolio Risk Management: Advanced statistical techniques powered by AI help hedge funds and asset managers manage portfolio risks. For example, AI can hedge out correlations and unwanted factor exposures from a portfolio manager's stock selections.

  3. Screening and Opportunity Identification: AI tools are used to analyze trends and identify companies or industries worth exploring. This includes using AI as a more effective screener to surface interesting investment opportunities.

  4. Alternative Data Utilization: AI helps break down revenue growth rates into components like market growth, market share gains, and pricing by leveraging third-party and alternative data sets. This provides a more granular view of company performance compared to traditional models.

Regarding large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT or Claude, they are primarily used for: - Drafting reports or summaries. - Generating ideas or brainstorming. - Automating repetitive tasks like formatting or initial data analysis.

While ChatGPT is widely used, other models like Claude or industry-specific AI tools may offer advantages in corporate environments, such as better compliance with data privacy or more tailored functionalities for financial tasks.
