Am I off base here?

My best friend and business partner is a pretty jealous guy about his fiancé. She's probably a 7 on a 10 scale in terms of hotness. Nothing special, but she can have her moments. When someone (a male) compliments here appearance it sends my friend into a near jealous rage. If I were to say something like, "Wow, [fiance] looks great today," he'll give me this evil eye. But since I'm not very good looking and I'm his closest friend, it's usually not terrible.

But it all came to a head this weekend when we were at a Starbucks. There's this guy there that is mentally retarded/mentally damaged in some way (he has conversations with himself and junk). My friend's fiancé left Starbucks and this mentally challenged guy, who my friend knows, walked up to my friend and said, "Your gf is hot." My friend became really angry and said, "Don't you talk about her like that!"

I basically said, "Geesh, relax. Take it as a compliment. In 15 or 20 years nobody is going to be saying that, so enjoy it while it lasts."

Am I off base? Is it normal to get really jealous over other men complimenting a guy's fiancé (even if it is inappropriate)? If it were me I'd just say, "Hey, thanks. I'm really blessed."

No, it's not "normal" for him to get that jealous. Kid's got issues.

Your friend has some severe trust issues that he needs to work on; your fiance is in the clear. There's nothing a beautiful woman can do about being beautiful: men will compliment her and pursue her, regardless of her social status. Your friend needs to fix those issues, otherwise his continuing unnecssary jealous and anger will make his fiance feel worthless and unwanted. She'll begin to think of what it'll be like to be single, or with gentleman. A man needs to one up other men. I had a girlfriend once; definite 8 or 9. Guys were ALWAYS hitting on her, but because I didn't care, neither did my girlfriend. I was humbled that I was with such a beautiful girl. I always made her feel like the queen of the world, so she never, ever considered the idea of being with another man making her feel that way. Everything has a balance. You should get jealous sometimes. Show your SO that she's your girl every now and then, but don't be a vagina who's jealous and overprotective. But seriously, if your friend wants to marry that girl, he NEEDS to stop being jealous NOW, before they get married. Those trust issues, those fears of unfaithfulness, will only poison the sacred fountain of life that their marriage could one day be.

What would he say if i said: "She looks incredible today. I want it all, and then some".

"Hey, buddy, just a tip. Your girl really has screamers from anal. You're welcome chum, tell her me and Tyrone say hi."

My drinkin' problem left today, she packed up all her bags and walked away.

What I don't get is that he's actually really good looking and charming, which is reflected in his job (he's a very successful business producer). And he's also a really nice guy, well liked by virtually everyone. I'm not sure exactly what his issue is or why he's insecure.

I have a friend like that's similar, though he doesn't get that insanely jealous about girls. Just from a wealthy family, good looking, and well-liked, but probably one of the most insecure guys I know
