AME (Everything) Pro Wrestler Edition
Per @AndyLouis" asking me I decided to do a Q&A about my time as a professional wrestler. Not sure how i could confirm without outting myself but I was the equivalent of the musician playing in coffee shops and open mics trying to get noticed by the WWE. I had friends go in and who are currently signed (and left and did some work in Japan). Anyway ask me anything from business stuff, fitness tips, bullshit, etc.
What is the locker room like? Alcohol, drugs, party, etc.? Did you get win a belt? What are some of the horror stories of underground wrestling?
1) Locker room? HA! just a room in the back that was co-ed. Alcohol always flowed freely. I had some friends that did steroids.
Funny story one time I was gonna buy some but I was robbed at my gym the day of. Never got any so I stuck with prohormones.
2) I didn't travel alot (Well Mexico). Most of my travel was domestic and since Texas is the size of many countries even the various regions of Texas have different types of wrestling.
3) Yes. I won at least 3 belts. Won a Royal Rumble style match. Had lots of fans (I was normally portrayed as a Face (good guy) because chicks generally digged me.
Fun story one time in a match I got a fan so concerned for my well being they jumped the guard rail to help me fight the guy. I take that as a badge of honor as to how belivable I was.
4) Deaths. Cokeheads. Ppl having blood diseases like HIV and still wrestling (there is no commission so we have to police ourselves) trainees dying. Sad stuff
What made you give up the dream?
Injuries.
Neck, Hip, Back, Knee, Shoulder.
Also I came to a realization it was no longer my dream. Going thru 3 hr drills will do that do you. Especially drills where you are throwing yourself up and down like burpees.
Fitness tips - what is your routine, how has it changed from trying to make it in pro wrestling to whatever you are doing now, what have been your biggest fitness "lessons" learned?
When I was wrestling I basically worked out like a NFL player (partly why at my peak I was the size of a linebacker). Imagine James Harrison just not as big.
Now I focus on trying to protect my joints. Rarely do I max out (but I still lift relatively heavy) but I add yoga into my routine.
Biggest lesson I learned is it's ok to rest sometimes in the gym. Tried to bench press like an idiot once with a broken hand (undiagnosed but suspected didn't have healthcare. Just tape that shit up and keep going) because I didn't want to miss chest day.
Also you don't have to go balls to the wall every workout. Especially if you're natural. Your body can't do that. Progress is the key. One set at a time.
