Apartment Security Deposit

I'm moving to a new apartment and I'll be paying rent on the first of the month. I'm not signing a lease, just writing checks to the roommate who holds the lease. He's asking for a month's worth of rent as a security deposit.

What would the security deposit be for if I'm paying rent on the first of the month?

Nevermind, I get it. It's in case I fuck up the place. Since there's no lease though, I'll need to put something in writing saying he's taking a security deposit. What should I do to make this legally binding?

just write it down - never agree to this in conversation w/o backup

Right, but any specific wording or format I need to use?
