Apple Intentionally Slowing Down Your iPhone

Some very smart Reddit users have realized that Apple is intentionally slowing down older iPhones. As a device is used over a period of time, its battery becomes worn out and less effective; older iPhones not only have more worn out batteries, but also lower-capacity batteries. Recent iOS updates, iOS 10.2.1 in particular, limit the performance of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S to prevent the phone from randomly shutting down. The Reddit users have noticed that after updating the batteries on their older iPhones, the performance returned to normal (see twitter link).

Obviously, many Apple customers are unhappy, as most unaware iPhone owners just end up buying a new iPhone once their current iPhone starts slowing down, which definitely costs them way more than a simple battery replacement.

Apple confirmed the theory, but claims it is done for the user’s benefit:

Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions, have a low battery charge or as they age over time, which can result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components. Last year we released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE to smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down during these conditions. We’ve now extended that feature to iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2, and plan to add support for other products in the future.

What do you think of this? Is Apple being a good company and slowing the iPhones down for our own safety, or can Apple do more to ensure the iPhone’s battery lasts longer?

Apple has to make more money some or other way, this was one of it. A removable battery would simply have solved this issue but cmon it's not 1990s no more. With development comes some disadvantages people are freaking out simply.
