True to some extent. However, you can definitely pick up some pointers from stuff like Dale Carnegie.

Also, I've found psychology books pretty helpful in my career......not for networking but certain office situations For example, you can encounter some really strange personalities in your life time such as manic depressives, sociopaths, etc.. Based on just your personal experiences, it can be difficult to understand these people or understand how to react to them or why they act like they do. If you've read some psychology, you can indentify that you're dealing with a personality disorder and plan your social interactions around that.

For one, worked with a manic depressive a while back. Had highs where he was on top of the world and the super friendliest guy on the planet. And lows where he hated everything and everyone for no reason.

If you've never read a psychology book, you might not what to make of this, but this was basically textbook manic behavior over and over again. So you knew that this was something psychological. On his lows, I didn't take anything he said too personal and before you know it, he was out of the cycle and back to being a nice guy. Made it a lot easier to work with him once you understood what was going on.

Note that it took a little bit of time to figure out with enough of a pattern of behavior, but given some basic psychology courses from college, I could almost textbook nail it down and knew how to react.
