Beyond Hard Work: What Makes Someone Exceptional?

What separates the best performers from everyone else?

For those of you who have worked with truly exceptional people, what specific habits, qualities, or ways of thinking made them stand out?

Not the usual answers like “working hard” or “being disciplined,” but the subtle things you noticed that made you think, this person is genuinely operating at another level.

Would love to hear some real-life observations.

Being pleasant to be around.

Life is too short and you spend way too much time at work for weirdos and dickheads.

...but is it REPE?

Agreed. What makes someone exceptional is the way they treat others.

the best way I can describe it is they're balanced magnets. they simultaneously have no holes in their lives while being someone that attracts others

a balanced life is obvious, I've written about my spokes framework in the past, just follow that

being a magnet requires selflessness, curiosity, good listening, conscientiousness, trustworthiness, and more

If you're talking about just pure intelligence, so not personality, family background, good character, etc.. which are all more important than intelligence btw in most cases.

I'm convinced its well utilized/well fit neurodivergence.  The top professionals I've met, the absolute top, have always given me that, "this guy's brain structure is fundamentally different" feeling.

This is not to say most people with ADHD/Autism/Whatever else are successful.  Those who have that, and weren't harmed by it, and found a use for it though, they end up being the geniuses.

Honestly, it's about anticipating the next three steps before anyone even asks. The truly exceptional people I've worked with don't just execute tasks well; they absorb context so fast that they magically remove friction for everyone around them, making hard problems look completely routine.
