Buying a Laptop
My desktop computer of the last 6.5 years crapped out on me. Therefore I'm on to a laptop for a personal computer. What is the consensus for processors, RAM, SSD, etc these days? I have 1TB of cloud space so I can afford to have a small SSD if that is optimal, though I have never used a PC with that.

Definitely SSD. I haven't used a computer without one in 5+ years. 16GM RAM at least too. You could get away with 8, but it's annoying and you'd be buying a new computer sooner than later.
Lenovo or Apple are my favorites.

Dude SSDs came out more than 10 years ago. They were standard for boot drives 8 years ago. Modern laptops don't even have what people would recgonize as an SSD anymore as they have morphed and taken on an entirely new form factor. A laptop that is 5 years old likely has an m.2 form factor SSD.

Macbook Air 13 inch (can even get a model from a couple years back). Minimum 256 GB Long battery life, big screen, resilient, light

What is the real difference between a "work" laptop and a "gaming" laptop. I feel like gaming laptops are at a little bit of a discount for same or better specs?
"Work" laptops generally have more robust frames and chasis. This is becuase it is expected that the device will be lugged around alot. Also they are made of lighter and more expensive materials.
Gaming laptops aren’t really cheaper, just different specs - usually a more powerful computer.

The main question is what do you actually want? Laptop or desktop? You said buying a laptop as the title but your post text is all about your desktop.
Lev Fin guy here - **NEED 32GB + GET A GRAPHICS CHIP**can def weigh in on key risks if you don't get top specs. You need to set yourself up for 2-3 years into the future, including watching 4K video. Otherwise there will be a lag, you'l be forced to uninstall any downloads of any Adobe products beyond PDF, etc.
Laptop purchased this week vs. after coping with painful issues/frustrations with previous top-notch Dell laptop. Purpose/Incremental Need - do video editing

Conclusion - gaming laptop has been a dream come true, solved all my problems, sets me up for the future, and looks cool as hell (Purple and blue light show when you power on)
Anything from Lenovo or Asus lineup should do just fine
SSD should be at least 256Gb and if you work with professional video editing soft or playing games you should look for no less than 1-2GB of SSD or at least HDD
for work 8 GB or Ram should be enough, and everything above 16 GB is an overkill
When it comes to GPU then everything from 3xxx Nvidia family is good but is very hard to find due to the high demand from crypto miners
