Can we talk about how amusingly sleazy-sounding WSO interview prep ads are?

"One of my best friends was a finance savant, with a 3.9 from a target school. But he failed the interview process, and now he sells mortgages at a local bank. He’ll never be an investment banker, and he’ll live with the pain of regret for the rest of his life, wondering what if..."

"What do you want to be doing? Living in a penthouse, working on multibillion dollar deals and climbing the elite ladders of finance? Or living with your parents, selling mortgages in the suburbs and watching your friends having the lucrative career that should have been yours."

Like, Jesus, how cheap and desperate does that sound? lol

Even if it is tongue-in cheek, its sales. I have made similar pitches to kids who I coached to get upper-tier jobs (finance, consulting, biotech, etc).

"Want to know something (and why I will not post this to my username): I beat out and got hired alongside Ivy leaguers with a 3.7+ GPAs...while going to a non-target school with a 2.4 GPA who was homeless for 3 months of his senior year. I spent 5 months after graduating telling people to screw themselves when they said I was being unrealistic about the job I wanted. You know what happened? I ended up in the newest-built office in Southern California, looking at the beach + ocean from my desk, alongside some guy hired the same day as me who graduated top of his class from Cornell."

Ill end my rant now, but realize most of sales may sound cheap, but, especially if there is merit to it, it is a compelling way of pitching if the messaging/presence is right.

Well, it didn't quite work out for me. I actually felt LESS compelled buying it after how cheap and sleazy it sounded. Specially after I noticed the ads for PE, HF and IBs are the same, they just change a few words, and in each of them they trash the other careers lol like: 'So, you wanna get in PE, or are you happy with being stuck in shitty IB?"

Over sold for sure, but I’m assuming it’s because they figured young impressionable kids are the ones spending dough on guides, so they just target naive underclassmen

Ouch, this hurt... But it's a fair criticism. I think maybe the copywriter I hired to help wso was a bit too aggressive. That being said, it's 100% my fault for not toning it down more. If you genuinely believe in the products and the stories are true, I think most sales copywriters will tell you to paint a similar picture.

Issue is sales jumped dramatically after those changes so we're actually able to help a lot more students now.... So definitely mixed feelings about it personally.

The thing is, if you felt compelled enough to start a thread about it, maybe it's time for a change! Patrick

Hey, WSO. Nice one. It felt * **incredibly ** ** ** ** * lazy, sleazy and cheap. I was actually kinda disappointed by the marketing tone. Didn't strike me as technical, down-to-earth or serious enough.

Hey, WSO. Nice one. It felt * **incredibly ** ** ** ** * lazy, sleazy and cheap. I was actually kinda disappointed by the marketing tone. Didn't strike me as technical, down-to-earthor serious enough. I'd also suggest only one text for all three courses ( IB, PE and HF interviews). It makes it seem more serious and concise if you put all information in just one text. When you just copy and paste the exame text in 3 different tabs just changing a few data, it looks lazy as hell.
