Career Passion: The transition from the Job Shine to bringing in the money everyday

I think that when people get their first job, it's either $$$/reputation or they are genuinely interested in banking/markets, etc./ I'm going to focus on the latter (real interest) here and I'm more familiar with traders who leave after 9 years.

However. as people grow older, it becomes more of putting up with various stuff for income. ie: maintenance
Say a young gun joins a hedgefund out of undergrad and starts to realize this isn't what he/she wants to do. They can either stick with it or switch industries.

How do you see people rediscover their interests and what do you see around you in regards for career passion over time?
