Carlyle acquires Jagex
This morning it was announced that Carlyle has acquired Jagex, the publisher and developer of RuneScape. What does this mean for the game, its economy, and Venezuela?
Only half-kidding about the Venezuela part. If you're confused, just look up 'runescape venezuela'
Wow Runescape is still around? One of my first attempts at a business was paying kids at school to mine iron ore and selling other kids GP for real money. Was easy to buy it from people online and resell to kids at school. The early 00s were a good time.. :)
Yeah it's still around. RuneScape gold is actually a surprisingly stable form of currency. There's a whole ecosystem of buying and selling gold propped up by Venezuelans who literally farm RS gold as their primary source of income
That's funny and sad.

Wow
Really interesting to see what its become, having grown up with the game
Have you done Shield of Arrav yet? I am in Phoenix gang but can’t find a partner to finish the quest. I will pay you 10k gp.
Hey wso blocks your password ******** try it out now!
Hey I think it works! *********
A blockchain RScoin needs to become a thing
Could maybe invest more in botting detection and real-world trading detection. Can shift to selling the currency themselves.
But maybe Jagex intentionally doesn't ban botters as they still make money from their membership fees.
WSO & Finance meets Runescape? The crossover event no one expected but what we all deserved
I actually logged in back in November to check the state of the game out - assuming Carlyle can read the obvious playbook of what it takes to grow a game's community, I'm actually optimistic. All the BS Jagex did over the past decade was "profit motivated" and damaged the business enough to create this opportunity in the first place.
Let me know if you want your armour trimmed, looks amazing in both OSRS and RS3
OSRS is the best hands down. I can't get into RS3 at all, but I'm sure a big part of it is nostalgia.
Looking back, did anyone else get their first experience with financial markets on RS? I remember at one point there were even "merch clans" running pump-and-dump schemes on the grand exchange
RS was simultaneously a huge waste of time and an amazing education on financial markets, scams, etc. Probably spent 1000s of hours on that game as a kid
For what it's worth, the company was already sponsor-owned. Insight bought a majority (55% I think) stake in 2012.
Any comment about the history of monetization attempts in the game should begin exactly there.
I swear, half of the people you meet on any online forum born between 1985-1995 (roughly) have nostalgic stories about untold hours merching in W1 or W2 before the Grand Exchange, powermining, pk-ing, and clan wars.
When I was 8 or 9, I let a friend use my account and he dropped my bronze kiteshield. I remember feeling like the world was ending
I wouldn't be surprised if the RS elites were behind r/WSB and the GME shenanigans. Seems an awful lot like the time I was convinced to spend all my cash on rubies for double the GE price, only to dump them for a loss after the clan leaders had already liquidated
Who wants to LBO Neopets with me? That's where I got my start as a merchant
