Chasing ghosts

A director once told me that chasing the next move in your career (ie. the next exit opportunity, the next position) is like chasing ghosts. You never really know where you will end up, so no need to stress yourself out about it now. I don’t think he meant this in a way of being completely ignorant about the next step, but in a way of just doing the best at the moment and doing what you enjoy while focusing on other things in life. As someone who likes to plan out everything, I find it quite difficult to proceed with ignorance or venturing in the dark so to speak. Although I see the wisdom in it. I think we live in a world where knowing your next step is very common and one might feel “behind” if they don’t know what position or company they wanna end up next. Especially when everyone else seems to know their next “ghost”

Based on the most helpful WSO content, the advice you received about not overly stressing about the next move in your career and focusing on doing your best in the present while enjoying what you do aligns with a broader perspective often discussed in the finance industry. It's a reminder that while strategic planning is important, being too fixated on the future can detract from valuable experiences and opportunities available right now.

The notion of "chasing ghosts" suggests that the future is inherently uncertain and that overly stressing about specific exit opportunities or next positions might not be the most productive approach. This doesn't mean one should proceed with complete ignorance of their career trajectory but rather adopt a balanced approach that includes:

  1. Strategic Planning: Have a general direction or goal in mind but remain flexible to opportunities that may arise unexpectedly.
  2. Skill Development: Focus on acquiring and honing skills that are valuable and transferable across various roles and industries.
  3. Networking: Build and maintain relationships within your industry. Networking can provide insights and opportunities that you might not have considered.
  4. Mindfulness and Well-being: Remember that career is just one aspect of life. Ensuring you're mentally and physically healthy can improve your performance and satisfaction both in and out of work.

In a world where it seems like everyone knows their next step, it's important to remember that many are in the same boat as you, uncertain but moving forward. The key is to make informed decisions based on your interests, values, and the market, rather than feeling pressured to have everything figured out. This approach can lead to a more fulfilling career path that aligns with your personal and professional growth over time.
