Chicago Internship Housing

Interning in Chicago this summer and trying to find a decent/cheap option. Everything I’m seeing is 1800+ monthly and just seems like a scam. Does anyone have any good living recs? Ideally would like to live somewhere cheaper where I won’t get shot.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some recommendations for affordable and safe housing options in Chicago during your internship:

  1. Lincoln Park: A popular choice for young professionals. It's affordable, has plenty of activities, and offers a reasonable commute to downtown. It's also considered a safe area.

  2. Old Town: Another great option, but avoid living directly on Wells or LaSalle streets due to noise from nightlife. It's slightly more expensive than Lincoln Park but still a solid choice.

  3. West Loop: Close to the financial district with lots of restaurants and bars. It can be pricey, but sharing an apartment with roommates can make it more affordable.

  4. Hyde Park: If you're okay with a slightly longer commute (~30 minutes via Metra), Hyde Park is a more budget-friendly option. It's quieter and offers a good balance of affordability and safety.

  5. Roommates: To cut costs, consider living with 1-2 roommates. Sharing a place not only reduces rent but also gives you company during your limited free time.

  6. Sublets from UChicago Students: Many UChicago students sublet their apartments during the summer, especially in areas like Hyde Park. These can be high-quality apartments at reasonable prices.

  7. Avoid Paying Premiums for Proximity: While living close to the office is convenient, paying top dollar for a place you’ll barely spend time in might not be worth it. Focus on areas with a good balance of cost, safety, and commute time.

Lastly, always vet the area and apartment before committing. If you're unsure about a neighborhood's safety, check crime maps or ask locals for advice.
