Cold Call Frustrations
So I've been basically getting nowhere with cold calling and it's starting to get to me. All I've gotten out of my (tiny 2 week effort) have been HR emails and phone numbers that lead directly to voice mail.
Now I know cold calling is a long term process and 2 weeks isn't close to enough but I'd still hoped to speak to someone from HR atleast. Well there was that one guy who basically told me to fuck off......but that was it. Maybe I'm doing something wrong or maybe it just needs more time. I'd keep at it though so we'll see.
Anyways, I'm curious to know if anyone here is/was in the same position and how you guys are dealing/dealt with it. I'd love to get some pointers as well from those who had success with cold calling.
First, what is your end goal of the cold call?
Calling HR is generally not a good idea because they don't care and have their job of screening 13948234897 resumes already so dealing with another one probably isn't on their list of top priorities.
If you're trying to network into a job, you want to call the people that would actually be able to have a say in getting you hired. Calling HR isn't going to work.
Well my end goal here is to get an internship (paid/unpaid). I know HR is not the best people to call but there's not much else I could do. All the higher ups calls go straight to voice mail (which I have also tried). I should also mention I'm targeting boutiques
Have you tried sending out an emails to a lot of these people? A cold email could actually work better if the person you're trying to contact is busy. You could even work it in there that you have tried to call them and you understand that they are busy, yada yada yada. This way you aren't interrupting what they are doing and they will be able to pick the time to talk on the phone with you or meet up for an informational meeting.
Also, since you're willing to do an unpaid internship, you are 99% likely to not get that from talking to HR. If you talk to a FO person, they might not have the budget for a paid intern but could bring you on as an unpaid intern. HR will never suggest that because "We don't have any positions open right now".
I thought it was widely known that you don't talk to HR, but the people who actually can push for you.
