College Nostalgia
I'm watching Clemson vs Boston College rn, good game. Reminiscing about my stoner days in the bleachers, I miss those times. A time when it was legal to take life for granted.
What were you monkeys doing during your college hay days? Were you hardos, studying IB technicals and behaviorals day and night? Or played it cool knowing you'd always end up in Finance?
Me personally, coming into college I knew I wanted to work in IB. No one respects your freshmen year, clubs and programs want you to have some skin in the game before accepting you so I just spent freshman year maintaining my GPA, partying, socializing and being a horny little scrub. I read surface level books on finance, nothing in depth, just to keep me grounded. Liar's Poker, The Quants, Barbarians at The Gate, Too Big to Fail, Ugly Americans, etc.
I took Sophomore year a tad more serious because I was tryna yield SA internships of course. Lots of coffee chats with alums, lots of campus involvement with clubs. I still partied but my social dynamic changed dramatically due to my engagement with like-minded peers. I started reading more in depth books. LBOs, DCFs, M&A, etc. Felt like I knew Damodaran personally. Me and the fellas hosted staged interviews every Sunday night to practice our technicals and behavorials.
Junior year was very much of the same, but my anxiety kicked into 5th gear. "Now or Never" - "This is it" motto. Once I got my return offer, I coasted senior year. Spent a lot of time big brothering IB freshmen and reconnecting with old dormmates. Plus I graduated a bit earlier because I took extra courses my freshmen year.
CLEMSON WON btw. Norte Dame is next week.
Tell me about your college days in the trenches!!
As a current senior with a return offer I take bullshit classes and drink on the beach after surfing.
Cali?
Yessir school in NorCal
I went to military college. I took classes nonstop from fall freshman year to spring senior year. 2 majors and a minor. I also studied abroad twice. In Spain for 6 months and China for 3.5 months. Studying abroad was like a nonstop party with some classes. Good times.
You sure those were good times?
My boy with the muscles
Smoke weed, drink beer. Go to the pool or River. All day everyday. Didn’t know shit about investment banking, PE, etc.. but turned out fine
When did you find out about IB?
Constant weed smoking, going out 3 days a week, skip class and go to the river and chill, and once in a while go to football practice as that's why I was there to begin with.
Overall, the main thing I miss the most is our 8-person house. Always something to do and someone was always up for something. Plus chipping in $20 each for pot/booze made buying in bulk a lot easier.
Never knew about high finance until right after graduation so spent the first 8 months of my career doing some bullshit. Soon found the power of networking and in due time, found a niche PE position that I grew in and could not be more grateful for.
This, this is gold.
