company directorships

Does anyone have experience with acting as a paid member of a company's board of directors?

I think that being such a director might be educational - and I'm told these roles are paid, which could make for a nice supplement to finance work.

Does anyone have any experience in this?

Are these roles difficult to get?

I'm told D&O insurance covers liability, but is there still additional risk?

And what would BOD directors do usually?

Is it mostly advising the company mgmt and voting on critical issues?
