Connection of a life time
Long story short: My dad got me a phone call with a member of the board of directors of a fortune 500 bank. He is good friends with the bankers brother so I got the connection through him.
I am wondering how I should go about this phone call. Obviously he can easily help me out and get me a job but I do not want to seem like that's all he is worth to me. The brother told me he loves helping people and that he uses the power of this position to help people he knows find jobs.
How should I go about this phone call? What are some topics or things I should talk about?
This is the opportunity of a lifetime so any help would be great.
Just ask him questions.. How did he get to where he is? Most people love talking about themselves and will gladly walk you through their career from college to present, and from that point on it just becomes a regular conversation (why did you want to work in that field/ for that company/group?, etc.) When talking about yourself just harp on your interest in the field, and your desire, willingness, and ability to learn. People would much rather hire a student who is hungry to learn and succeed than some know-it-all
Have a list of questions at your disposal. Avoid tired questions like "Why X?" or anything you could find with a quick Google search. Also, remember that at the end of the day, he is just human. Don't try too hard.
