Cover Letter Heading and Opening Salutations
If I'm applying to internships through OCR and all I have is a company name and job description, how should I address the opening salutations?
"Dear Sir or Madam" "Dear (company name)" "Dear Hiring Manager"
Also, does anyone have recommendations on the heading, given the information available to me?
I was thinking something like:
My name Address City, state, zip code Phone number Email address
Date
Dear Hiring Manager,
SB's for help with my rookie question.
I always had my name at the top, centered and large, with address/city/state/zip/phone/email on a line under it in smaller font separated by little bullet point things (fancy shit, I know) but that stuff's all up to you. After that though my typical format was:
Date
Company Name (if you have contact info) Their Contact Info (if given)
Dear [Company Name] Recruiting Team,
body
I've been told that one works pretty well, and is less stupid sounding than "to whom it may concern" or whatever else they tell you at your career services office.
If you can find the name of the recruiter or the head of the recruiting team, I've heard that putting Dear [actual person's name] is something that helps you stand out. It shows that you've actually done some research. Oftentimes if you go into OCR and into a company's individual profile you'll be able to find that sort of information.
Who do address in cover letter with online application? (Originally Posted: 10/17/2014)
If it's for a large bank and you're just submitting an online application, who would you address? Like Dear...
I'd go with "Dear Sir or Madam" but I have no basis for it other than I think it sounds better than "To Whom It May Concern." I'm sure there's some HR person sitting in a poorly lit cube with nothing better to do than have a really strong opinion on it though.
Don't include one... They are pointless and can only hurt
Don't include a cover letter? I've always heard that if you don't include one it will look like a lack of ambition on your part :s is that not the case? All of the apps have asked for one too. Unfortunately
if you don't know who is the contact, what do you put as a salutation in a cover letter? (Originally Posted: 01/14/2007)
I don't want to use to whom it may concern, so who should I address the cover letter to?
