Crazy Portfolio Companies?

Read something that Platinum Equity owns a prison phone company called Aventiv, or as they put it a "provider of innovative solutions to the corrections and government services sectors". I decided to check out the rest of their portfolio and saw that they also own a gambling platform called Arrow and a bulk rum producer called E&A Scheer. Seems like a parody of real life, is it common to find portcos like this?
