1. If staffer is the only one making those decisions for interns, then tell the staffer you have capacity if any teams need help.
2. At shops I have worked at, interns generally floated around and were "staffed" on things on an as needed basis, summary page here, helping with VDR there, etc. I am sure if you ask an analyst or an associate if they need any help, the worst that will happen is they say no.
3. If you have a lot of free time during the day, do some research on your industry, practice getting familiar with your firms models, see if people at your shop have time for coffee, you have the rest of your life to work and as long as you are doing everything you can to meet people and produce good work when asked, that's all you can do for a return offer.
