Distance apartment hunting?
I'm entering a grad program across the country in August. I had set up a living arrangement with a student who just graduated from the program, and it fell through yesterday. I feel pretty screwed.
How do you approach this situation? Driving to look at places means missing multiple days of work, and flying is tough because I'm too young to rent a car. I've lived in a studio for the past couple years and am really dreading going back to having a roommate, but it looks inevitable. I've also never lived in an apartment with a random, the times I had roommates they were friends. How do you avoid ending up with some scumbag?
Are online ratings completely useless? It seems like the only people who bother to post those are those who are pissed off and want to complain. As an example, I'm completely happy with the place I'm in now, but it has a 1.5/5 average on Apartmentratings.
Given the situation, is it ever the correct move to sign with a place online without ever seeing it in person? Or is that just automatically a terrible idea?
As a final longshot, anyone who's going to be in Austin next year and is looking for a roommate can shoot me a PM.
See if you can get a sublet for a month or two. Theres a section of craigslist just for that. That way even if its crappy its only temporary. You can looks for a more permanent place with a lease after you move in there.
I've signed a couple places without seeing them first hand and haven't had a bad experience yet. Ask for extensive pictures and specs. Ratings online can be OK but I agree they are often miss-representative. Location is the most important part imo, you can usually get a good feel of the place with pictures, its the outside that's difficult. For that I'd consult someone that lives in the area or do a little searching online.
