Do MLB teams draft based off their park?
alright i've had this ongoing discussion with my friends about mlb drafts....now i know the first few rounds are just phenoms and usually their position/etc doesnt play a huggggeeee part in the drafting decision...and i also know that teams can alter the landscape of their field/walls in teh offseason...but to what extent does drafting have to do with ballparks...i mean its unique in that no other sport really can guage location into draft decision making...but does it happen?
Sure why not. If you are debating between picking a righty and lefty with equal power for your #4 spot, and your park is thirty feet shorter to right than to left, then take the lefty. But, bear in mind that many draft picks never make it to the majors so it should be used only as a tie breaker.
I would say zero to less than zero weight is given to parks. All draftees, from 1st round to 50th, spend at least a modicum of time in the minors.From the estimates I've seen, only about 5-10% of minor leaguers ever make the majors (I'd put it much closer to the 5) and who knows how many years it will take to reach the majors for the small percent who do, whether you will trade them etc etc etc. In sum, there are just too many variabilities in player development to care about how your park is structured.
The only instance I think this could even be a thought in a GM's mind is if you are someone like the Houston Astros, with a notoriously short left field, and you find a college kid (i.e. more developed) with good power to left, whom you expect to start in double or triple and bring up in September or something. Even then, it's far down on the list.
I agree with Cartwright, GM's are looking for talent and def not concerning themselves with park dimensions
