Do you believe in the evil eye?

I was having this conversation with friends and it seems many cultures such as Greeks Arabs Turks Indians Eastern European actually do believe in the evil eye and curses and the need for protection in form of a symbol or talisman or ritual. is there something in this? Can a malevolent gaze destroy your looks your health your wealth your relationship etc?As I understand the actual symbol for protection varies from culture to culture but the basic premise is the same.

I have an Italian side. Superstition and in particular the Evil Eye seeps into everything... think red chilli garlands and olive oil in water everywhere .... it’s nuts. My grandmother was a seamstress and I remember when I was young a neighbour of hers paid a friendly visit. Whilst they were drinking coffee my nonna was fiddling with her sewing box and basically kept stabbing the eye of one needle with the point of another infront of this woman. Later when I asked why she said it was for protection because she felt a sense of jealousy and envy from her. The more I think about it and my life in general I am pretty sure ppl have been doing this sort of shit about me behind my back with voodoo dolls or something

if it is all bs why is there an evil eye /eye of providence on a dollar bill - I mean seriously wtf?!
