Does anyone use Meetup.com?

This is not meant to be an advertisement.

I live in literally bumfuck middle of nowhere and I am planning my networking strat. I live train distance away from a major city but obviously that'd mean all of my planning has to be done through what I can scour online, rather than by ear or word of mouth.

So with that said, do professionals use meetup.com or is it something mainly for casual and local events?

For the tech scene in LA, yes I use it. I’ve found it useful. Can’t speak outside of my niche experience though.

Found it mostly relevant for sports in the cities I've lived in. Conferences and whatnot were usually more helpful.

yeah. You'll figure out whats worth going to and whats a plug to sell you something eventually.

Also, you might run into the issue that there aren't many meetups in bumfuck middle of nowhere, so you may need to search your nearest city.

Depends on where you are located.

Would agree with earlier comment to seek out nearest metro city since Meetup does not really work outside such cities. In my experience, it helped me tremendously when living in one of the larger metro areas especially after college. Now living in a lower tier city, not as useful, but there are other ways to meet people in terms of expanding social network.
