Does the average person think it’s weird I’m super interested/invested in my career?

Like many of you, I really enjoy trying to have a successful career. Obviously not every part of it is fun, but overall I really genuinely take interest in carefully selecting ambitious professional goals and doing my best to reach them. That being said, I was thinking recently that I might come off as weirdly obsessive about my career to the average person who sees a job more as a necessity than something fun and that I should be more mindful to moderate that aspect of my personality when appropriate. Does that kind of thing come off as weird to most people or nah? I’m hoping if you’re vaguely charismatic it just seems like you really have your shit together

I try and not talk about what I want to do professionally around friends. Not that it’s weird but you seem a very dry person if that’s all you talk about. Now I actually really do have an interest and enjoy learning about the field and what’s going on, setting goals, planning my career best I can, I enjoy that stuff. I try to not be a hardo though, it’s a balance.

I tend to agree with you. What does it say about someone who isn't passionate or interesting in their career? Obviously, not everyone is fortunate enough or in the financial position to pursue their dream job yet but I tend to hold less respect for my peers who aren't very passionate about the areas they are studying or working in. That being said, there are always exceptions, I think there are some who try to minimize the amount they put into work to maximize the amount of time and effort they put into other things such as friends, families and hobbies which I see as equally respectable. There's no point in working a six-day work week if you're mainly making money for someone else without a greater payout for you down the line (i.e. you're not working to get that promotion or dream job).

But what do I know... I'm just an intern...
