cancer and any other terminal illnesses are not jokes. to be practical, most of the Asian countries do not allow 2 - 3 years off from work to take care of terminally ill family member. you will be forced to resign. on a serious note, do not use someone's health condition as a way to escape from working.

In my second year after college graduation, I was living in N. Virginia (DC area) and wanted to WFH and move to NYC.

I approached my 5th line manager and he approved (manger’s manager manager manager manager) my move to WFH and NYC. The beauty of this is that it came down the chain to my manager and he was just happy to approve and it was no risk for him as it came from up top.

I was super tight with my 5th line manager though - it doesn’t work if you just ask a random person in the dark.

  • building work
  • big important delivery (e.g. furniture)
  • family commitments (caring for an elderly relative)

if none of those work, explosive diarrhoea

no one is giving this excuse a consideration in the country i live in. it is a matter of their dignity. they will even fake a medical leave but not a word about gas trouble.
