Facebook to use nudes against revenge porn

Background: Back in April, Facebook mentioned developing photo-matching technology to people can't re-share photos tagged as revenge porn. Then there was a huge scandal involving people posting nudes of female marines.

Present News: Now the moment you have all been waiting for (The reason you clicked this post), Facebook is developing a method to combat revenge porn; in Australia. As stated by this article by Techcrunch;

The strategy entails uploading your nude photos or videos to Messenger in order to help Facebook tag it as non-consensual explicit media.

The mechanics behind this new photo-matching technology goes like this;

“They’re not storing the image, they’re storing the link and using artificial intelligence and other photo-matching technologies,” e-Safety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant told ABC. “So if somebody tried to upload that same image, which would have the same digital footprint or hash value, it will be prevented from being uploaded.”

Australia is one of out four (not mentioned) countries that are piloting this photo-matching technology.

Do you believe this will actually curb revenge porn? Could this be something Facebook has released to divert peoples attention from the Russian campaign advertising on Facebook news. Lastly, will this help make headway for Facebook to tackle more of their issues that surround the social media platform?
