I'm sure most of you have heard by now but Facebook just approved the launch of video ads in their users' news feeds. This has been in the rumor mill and talks for a long time now and so this doesn't come as a huge surprise to those following the developments surrounding Facebook's efforts to monetize its huge user base. According to Seeking Alpha.
Facebook's news feed video ads, delayed more than once due to user experience concerns, are 15 seconds long (on par with Instagram's video ads) and begin automatically playing without sound. Clicking/tapping on an ad leads it to expand and sound to begin.Ad exec Brian Boland says Facebook is testing features that allow marketers to decide at what time of day an ad appears, how often it appears, and whom it reaches.
I might be a little skeptical here but how many of you monkeys think these video ads will work? I can definitely see a multitude of companies paying big bucks to advertise in this manner but how effective is it really? I know for a fact that as a 20 something year old, I rarely use Facebook anymore and when I do, I tend to skip over the ads and not pay attention to them. I acknowledge that I might be in the minority here, so I want to open it up for discussion to learn more.
What do you guys (and girls) think? Will this actually work as a way of advertising and reaching people who use FB?
Does anyone pay attention to ads? When I go on Facebook its certainly not because I want to check out some sick new 15 seconds video advertisements.
I'm with you here. I don't check out these ads and my Adblocker blocks them as well so I'm saved the trouble. I won't lie though if it's a commercial from Coca Cola or Google, I check them out because I love some of their commercials and the way they try to connect with people
You say you skip over the ads and not pay much attention to them, so I would say the same thing about TV ads and billboards on the freeway, so i would say # of viewers (however engaged) will be the driver of this ad rev for facebook.
I agree with you to an extent but I still pay more attention to TV advertisements and billboards. Maybe it's because I grew up being accustomed to them and took ads in as a part of those mediums. I see what you mean though
Pretty much all interruption marketing is dead, and it's been dying for a long time. FB will make some money with this because of scale and because most companies are still unwilling to admit that interruption marketing is no longer the best bang for their advertising buck.
I completely agree. I think companies are going to have to be more creative when approaching their marketing strategies henceforth. With online streaming, pop-up blockers and more savvy online consumers, their ads may not reach the intended audience.
I am pretty sure Adblock is already being updated to block this crap from the user feed.
It is. I just went onto FB to check and I can't see any of those ads.
I'm not sure if they're out yet, I turned Adblock off and didn't see any
