Fantasy Football: One Monkey's Escape

Experts say one key to happiness is to live in the present. I think it is fair to say though, that these experts have never had to go through a whole day staring at a spread sheet, occasionally doing work. All employees have that thought of the weekend or that future vacation in Vegas to keep them going through the day. For me (and a lot others) it is fantasy football.

If it is only fantasy, how come I have to change my pants after?

Fantasy football is my favorite escape from the work place. I am researching players, performing mock drafts and talking trash to my friends constantly through the day during football season. That season is here. Preseason is underway and according to statistics that I am making up, 90% of fantasy drafts happen in August. Finally, there is something to keep my mind off of how mind numbing the work is that I actually do.

As one walks around the office floor, it becomes apparent that everyone loves to talk about fantasy football. If they are talking about fantasy football, they are not talking about work. People who know nothing about football, and holler home run after every touch down, still enjoy pretending that they are an expert in fantasy football. It is the ultimate escape. It is my favorite.

Here is a list of my top 5 favorite escapes from work:

  1. Fantasy Football:
  2. See above.

  3. The Weekend:
  4. As I truck along through the week, I always have the thought about how awesome the weekend will be. It does not matter that my day dreams of the weekends are always more exciting than the actual weekend. It’s the potential of the weekend that drives me.

  5. Texting Friends:
  6. The banter that I have through the day with my friends is vitally important. Nothing we talk about is interesting, or intelligent. It is banter. It may be sharing a funny article, or talking about the kid from college who is getting married after knocking some girl up. Regardless, it makes me smile and it helps me through the day.

  7. Food:
  8. I may think about dinner for the night, or what I will eat on the weekend. It can be as simple as a burrito from Chipotle or using Google to find the best burger in the city. I keep my mouth watering and my mind at ease.

  9. Vacation:
  10. I dream of that beach that I will be on. I think of the club that I will party in. The vacation can be days, weeks or even months away. I will still circle that date on my calendar and plan all the great festivities that I will take part in.

What are your escapes?
