Favorite Whisky
I saw someone start a favorite tequila thread and was thinking I'd create a whisky one since it's my preference. I go for a single malt Scotch or Japanese whisky neat when I can. Would like to hear others' favorites/preferences if they drink whisky.
Redbreast Lustau is a favorite.
Glennfidich 12 yr for scotch and Bulliet for whiskey are my 2 go tos.
Can’t go wrong with a Glenfiddich
Scotch: Balvenie 12 Doublewood (single barrel is good too), Glenmorangie 10, and Glenrothes Burbon Cask Reserve
Bourbon: Buffalo Trace (basic, I know) and Angel's Envy
Japanese: Nikka Coffey Malt
Irish Whisky: Idk, I don't really have a favorite for this category
for Irish, have you tried Teeling's? Highly recommend.
Hibiki Harmony is a good Japanese whiskey (though overpriced).
For scotch, Deanston distillery is great (underpriced) as are most Bruichladdich products (fairly priced).
For bourbon, I’m a fan of Wild Turkey products, especially Russell’s Reserve (fairly priced). Buffalo Trace has great products too, with Eagle Rare (underpriced) and Blanton’s (way overpriced) being two great bottles at opposite ends of the price spectrum.

For most of the time probably, Ardbeg 10. Ever, probably Hibiki 21 year.
And to clarify my answer. Favs are Lagavulin 16, Talisker 18 and Yamazaki 12.

Scotch: Macallan 15
Jamison is my go to Irish cough syrup — not the finest of whiskeys but I might just have a plebeian palate
Woodford reserve is great for the price. Surprised it hasn’t been said.

Highly recommend the double oak version. A significant step up from the original.

Definitely Scotch Chivas Regal

On the less expensive side, I recommend Basil Hayden's
If you were to tell me that I could drink all I wanted, but had to limit myself to one whisk(e)y for the rest of my life, I would probably go for Green Spot or Redbreast. I also find Elijah Craig to be criminally underrated. For a budget mixing whiskey for Manhattans and the like it's tough to beat Jim Beam, although Old Crow isn't bad either. Just keep me away from Jack. That s*** is rancid. Scotch isn't really my game, and I can't say that I've had enough Japanese whiskys (is there an e in there?) to generate an opinion.
Bourbon:
Totally agree on Elijah Craig. I've gone through a lot of bourbons and I feel Elijah Craig is the best bang for the buck without a doubt (can get for ~$30 in NYC vs. more expensive alternatives that are about as good).
Price aside, I'm a huge fan of Angel's Envy.

Whisk(e)y is an old word that is spelled differently depending on what you're referencing. Japanese is just really weird given that you're basically translating the word 2-3 times. Do you drop the e? do you keep it? I've got a friend who's job is translating Japanese stuff to English (he's actually Irish) and even he has trouble with the spelling while moving it back into English.
Depends on which type you are referring to.
If American or Irish, then it is whiskey.
If it is Scottish, Canadian, or Japanese, then it is whisky.
If it is none of the above, then it is speaker's choice.
If the country has as “e” then it’s “whiskey.”
America, Ireland: Whiskey
Scotland, Japan, India, Canada: Whisky

Just wanted to say that Hibiki - Japanese Whiskey is so overrated and doesn't taste that different from Ballantines.
Was frustrated to drop so much money on an overpriced and overrated whiskey.

It’s HIBIKI and it’s not even close. Just got 6 of em bc they had a special. Trust me, You’ll never go back.
Lagavulin 16 and Bunnahabhain 18. Both strong Smokey flavors that you can’t go wrong with.

I got a belvenie 14 Caribbean cask as a gift once and thought it had too much of like a spice element to go out and buy. Enjoyed it for what it was worth tho
Just finished a Yamazaki 12, very good; Chivas 18 is ok, 25 was pretty amazing; Currently on the lookout for Blanton and michters 10 (b and r) and hunting for a good priced pappy but obviously highly unlikely
If you’re interested in a wheated bourbon you can actually find, I recommend maker’s cask strength

Woodford Reserve, Angel's Envy, Buffalo Trace, Balvenie doublewood, Oban 14, Glenlivet, loved all of these. Had lagavulin but it tastes/smells like band-aids and I can't get past it. Had 1792 Full Proof and it was very tasty and not too much burn for its proof
