Finance recruiting at UC schools?
Hey everyone,
There is a lack of information out there in regards to finance recruiting for the UC (University of California) schools. I would like some input about how much of a non-target the UCs are other than UC Berkeley and UCLA. Obviously, they don't place much to east coast offices but what about boutique IB, AM and ER firms in the SF area and LA/Orange County area?
Here's what I know so far:
UC Berkeley: the top UC. Haas is a target for west coast and semi-target to east coast. Strong brand name. Even the Econ majors place well.
UCLA: no business admin major but they have 2 new concentrations they are testing out with their econ program that consist of courses geared towards finance. They seem to place pretty well to LA offices and have a lot of alum at boutiques. Here's the link: http://economics.ucla.edu/undergraduate/current-s…
UC Irvine: ???? complete lack of info on OCR and employment outcomes for undergraduates.
UC Santa Barbara: econ major only. Finance connection club places 1-2 students a year to BBs.
UC San Diego: ???? econ major only. I heard somewhere that Barclays recruits on campus. This school has a very strong name but haven't heard much about placement.
UC Davis: ???
UC Santa Cruz: ???
UC Riverside: ???
UC Merced: ???
Some knowledge about placement from UCI, UCSD and UCSB in particular into SoCal boutiques would be of great help. Thanks!

Finance is just tough on the west coast. You probably end up doing TMT or health care anyways.
Caltech, Stanford, Cal, UCLA, USC are probably the target schools. Maybe throw in some small liberal arts schools like Pomona College? I dunno.
If I didn't get into Stanford, UCB, UCLA, etc.
I'd pick:
UCSD. I mean if you are on the surf team, you get a key to the gate at Black's. Plus, it is San Diego...
What else is there to say?
I would imagine the UCI Paul Merage School has a decent influence in the area to hover around #40 in most MBA rankings. I've only been to Irvine a couple of times and although it does have a great airport and business center it does seem more a commuter school/area in general. Being in Orange County though is legit for quality of life regardless.
At the end of it though I agree with trying to hit the big three for the area.
Edit: UCI Paul Merage has a BBA and BS in Bus Information Management undergrad UCI
UCSB seems to have a good network across lots of different areas of finance in SF and Socal. Also seems like a very fun place to go to college.
Don't know too much about UCI/UCSD but they are located in more urban areas than UCSB which would make networking and school year internships much easier. Don't think UCI would be a real fun place to go to school, seems like mostly commuters.
LinkedIN and the school career center can give you a better feel for what alumni of various schools are doing.
Thanks for the info. Never knew that about UCI, but couldn't find any info for undergrad on their site through multiple searches which brings up red flags.
Berkeley was good for west coast! From what I've seen.
LA BB here, USC is our top CA target school by a wide margin, but we also look at strong candidates every year from Berkeley, UCLA, and the very top from UCSB.
