Florida - No Shut Down?

So far, Governor Ron DeSantis has not issued a state wide shutdown for the state of Florida. This is mind boggling to me because the state has lots of old people. In the US, Florida has the highest percentage of people over the age of 65. According the Govt. Census, there are about 4.4 million people over 65 in Florida, second only to California, which has the most people over 65 but only because they have a lot more residents. He needs to do the right thing for his state and shut it down immediately.

Nope, I disagree. People shouldn't be forced by their government to stay inside. They can decide if they want to or not. Most will stay in. I know someone down in florida right now and he said basically everything is shut down anyways.

Should people be forced by their government to not shoot people on the street? To not blow up shopping malls?

Why the hell should the government be able to tell me who I can and cannot mail anthrax to. My mail, my choice.

A bit extreme there, but I agree with your premise that the government should be allowed to stop citizens from putting others at harm.

Look, my response was a bit flippant, but that's the problem with living in a non-authoritarian country, especially one in which the citizen body is as selfish as the United States. Balancing personal liberty with the public weal is a difficult tightrope to walk.

That being said, anyone advocating for looser controls, or prioritizing the economy over public health, needs to be willing to also stand up and say they'd be willing to sacrifice themselves and their family's health and/or lives; if all you're doing is condemning other people to fall ill and perhaps die so your stock portfolio doesn't drop further, well... that's a vile attitude and those people should be roundly condemned and then ignored.

You are entitled to have a different opinion but I think the view is a little selfish. The virus is very contagious and everyone is vulnerable to becoming infected. Older people are as vulnerable as younger people but the seniors would likely have a more difficult time recovering from it. I have a family member whose elderly parent recently died from Covid-19

I think this is very irresponsible. I will admit I drastically underestimated COVID and the health implications it would have.

I think Florida will be devastated and become worse than NYC.

Totally agree. Florida should have been the first state to shut down due to the age of the population. Florida may have a big problem as the virus infects more people. Also, some of the seniors are going to be coming back to the Northeast in the next couple of months and could bring the virus with them.

For once, I'm actually criticizing a conservative governor, but okay.

To make it clear, I think De Santis will flip just like everyone else who initially dismissed the issue.

Well that was rather quick, wasn't it? Point proven.
