EDIT: Actually on second thought it's similar to when Radiohead offered their album to people at whatever price they were willing to pay. First degree price discrimination... it might work if people weren't cheap.
Yes - very cool idea in theory. In practicality though, with 6,000+ followers on his Twitter w/ the card balance updates and the average Starbucks drink costing $3-$5, being able to time your purchase perfectly to get the free drink is really unlikely. Average balance on the card is just over the cost of one drink. Also, I heard somewhere that the barcode only works for iPhone users. Not positive though...
