And what part of this is surprising?
To be precise - The US and it's allies funded anti-Assad/Iran/Hezbollah elements calling them "moderate" rebels. We all know that there is no moderation when it comes to Islamic Radicals. A lot of the Qatari/Emirati/Saudi money intended for these "moderate" Sunni groups ended up going to ISIS/ISIL.
I am not trying to debate the merits of the US' anti-Iran/Assad strategy. Iran is certainly a dangerous adversary for the US interests in that region, but the facts that the anti-Assad effort helped the growth of ISIS remains true.
