Get a bonus vs working from home?

Here's a question for you all. Let's say you could work from home 1 day (sometimes 2 days) a week but because some seniors in the office don't like it, it risks your performance bonus of $20k. Assume that job security is not a problem in the role. Also assume that you don't intend to stay at the firm for longer term and there are people in the office that will vouch for you for future roles you go for. You're still doing work while at home but you do get flexibility in that time to do chores and run errands.

Would you guys forfeit the bonus for this flexibility?

Probably, particularly if it was a firm that valued facetime. Assuming you could save roughly 3 - 6 hours of facetime per week, you could use that time to nap/invest/relax. Assuming the industry is high stress (IB/VC/PE) I think it would be incredibly worthwhile from a health perspective. Even 30 minute naps make such a difference. However, if you are constantly grinding for 95% of the time you're in the office, it might not be as worthwhile. With no facetime saved, all you are doing is sacrificing your bonus to work in a location where you can conveniently rip JUUL

Look at it the other way - "If you come into the office on Fridays, we'll give you $20k"

I'd wake my ass up and take the money.

My girlfriend is in the same position with a discretionary bonus that is determined by her manager based on “team contribution”. Not only is it discretionary, it flexes (e.g. $0 - $33,000).

It’s an organizational breaking mechanism. Let the submissive fall into line for a non-guaranteed bonus that is completely dependent on so many more things than your subordination (e.g. will top performer leave if we don’t distribute to him/her, has what’s his face set a great example for culture that we need to broadcast as example).

Fuck imaginary money. Work from home more than 1 day a week and continue to produce results.

What this poster said. I never liked bowing down in fear of something like this, nor submissive to the idea that "fake" imaginary money is there waiting for me.

You produce results, they either give it to you or be stupid enough not to give it to you, and you move on to the next firm that will give you that bonus for those results. Their loss

No pain no game.

I get to WFH once a week and I can tell you right now there’s no way in hell I’d give up that flexibility for anything less than $10k, and even then I still don’t know if I would.

It’s almost like working 4 days a week - you get to sleep in, going out the night before becomes a lot more practical, can hit the gym during lunch and not have to worry about showering... etc.

I’m not lazy but I work to live, not the other way around.
