Getting screwed over by coworkers in terms of splitting workload
I'm a 3rd year credit analyst in a commercial banking group.
For the most part, it's a good gig. The work isn't overly intellectual, but there's legitimately a lot of money to be made. I really like the sales & customer facing aspects, and I'm hoping to have a role more focused on that in the future. My total comp is around $110K, which is really good given the usually decent hours.
From when I've started here, I've been a "go getter." I've been very open about my ambitions to basically get into a relationship manager role. They have echoed the same on their end, given me great bonuses the last 2 years, etc. So I've been very pleased with my career progress.
Unfortunately, my actual working situation really sucks at the moment.
I work closest with two people.
- Person 1 is way older - like a 50 year old "lifer" here. They have a senior title, but they basically have the same job as me. They delegate everything. They pretend to be super helpful, but they end up going quiet when it's time to step up. They literally aren't the point of contact person for anything. So they function as some type of internal advisor, which can (obviously) be irritating at times. They are definitely a bit out of touch.
- Person 2 is a bit older than me. They don't have the same career ambitions I do; they're satisfied in their current role. They don't do things to the same standard I do, so I find myself having to clean up their work a lot. Also, they do other irritating things like setting their out of office a bit early, so I end up having to take whatever thing comes up on a weekend, etc. Just a relatively lazy and unambitious person, who has screwed me over countless times as far as sharing workload goes.
A lot of the higher up people approach me all the time, because I'm the most dependable and eager.
I have been a 'yes' man so far, and I likely have to keep on doing that. But I've been feeling like I'm borderline getting taken advantage of.
Thankfully, some of the people do seem to notice the dynamic that's going on, But it's still a very frustrating situation
How have you pushed back successfully in this type of environment? Or, at least, bargained for yourself to make it worth it?
I once worked on a team of myself and another person to produce work and deliverables internally and for clients in management consulting. The other person was not motivated, was lazy, and when he did the work it was riddled with errors. He couldn't make a MS Word document look good. He barely touched MS Excel and it was known that he was so inept at advanced analysis that he was never assigned the work. The work he was assigned he didn't do and played videogames on the computer (!!!) until the deadline approached then would pass on the work to me. Meanwhile, while he was playing videogames in the office, I was working on all my work for my role as well, so I ended up doing all my work and all his work, while we were being paid just about the same. It drove me crazy some days. I didn't think it was fair, and it was when I first began to realize what it means to work for a big company.
Ugh, that sounds awful. What happened in the end to you, and to that person?
I'd like to believe that it all sorts itself out over time. A lot of these lazy people won't typically get the external opportunity, promotion, etc. For example, I really believe my bonus is way bigger than the one person I described.
I was promoted 1yr ahead of him; then I left the company and he was promoted twice.
