Globalism or Isolationism?

So seeing as we're watching the transition of China towards Globalism and the US back towards Isolationism, I'm curious as to what your opinions are on the subject. Rather than just spouting platitudes and common talking points, I'm more interested in a logical discussion where viewpoints of both perspectives can be rationally defended.

For me: Isolationism caters to my libertarian tendencies, but even as a libertarian I can admit that while it's a great personal philosophy, it doesn't translate to a diverse society well-- there will always be losers and letting them die off (figuratively speaking) is a bit too Spartan for today's values. So while I initially leaned towards isolationism, I'm now realizing that the goodwill we're currently surrendering may not be worth a few points in GDP in the short-term.

That said, Globalism has always been something of a double edged sword. When I hear stories about China and other countries investing heavily in other markets and regions, I can't help but equate it with modern day colonialism. I don't have an issue with it personally, (and I would do the same as a capitalist when it comes to the bottom line) but I can also see how this will create a lot of losers and disproportionally few outsized winners.
