Glowing Trees Kickstarter
I know that there are quite a few Kickstarter aficionados among us...
Did anyone else see this wacky upstart? It's pretty damn cool. A biotech team is splicing the bioluminescent genes carried by fireflies into common plants...ergo...glowing plants.
Any thoughts?
Plenty of people must think that it could be something of value, as it is killing it right now.
That guy is really, really ugly.
Igor!
Ha, I'm actually a supporter of this on kickstarter. Read a science article on this a few days ago that pretty much said it's impossible to replace street lights with these because they don't give off enough light. But I invested because I want a few in my game room.
Too bad it isn't possible to short kickstarter projects. What this group is attempting could easily have been tried a couple decades ago (the technology is pretty much the same). The reason nobody has bothered (at least as far as I'm aware) is that the bioluminescence is going to be WAY too faint. While the general idea of using plants as street lamps is theoretically possible, overcoming all the hurdles will require a Monsanto-level R&D budget (at a minimum).
Yay a night light you can't turn off, that couldnt be annoying at all.
Pretty much this. I think it would look cool next to my pool table, however.
It'd be like Pandora in NYC!
