Golf for Noobs
What is the most cost effective way for someone to get good at golf? I don't care to be good enough where people are shocked I have time for a job, just good enough where I don't blow my dignity. It is worth paying 100s for lessons?

IMO, a few hundred dollars for some lessons is worth it if you’re just starting out…depending on where you play, a few 18 hole rounds will cost you a few hundred bucks and dozens of hours - it really depends how quick you think you can learn on your own vs having an experienced coach show you what your doing wrong, seeing video, and making those connections in a more confined space of time.
If you live in the city - get an apartment with a golf simulator and practice. If you're in the burbs, buy a cheap simulator set (I looked it up before, you can get a decent set up for less than 10K).
Lots of bros with bruised egos trying to drive 300+ yards, don't be that guy. Practice your short games, that's where you score. You gotta be able to hit 30-125 yard shots with pin point accuracy (90%-110% from intended distance - ie. if you're going for a 100 yard shot, you have to be able to get 90-110 yards almost 100% of the time). Get a putting mat in your room, doesn't take much space - you have to be able to sink 5ft putts at least 50% of the time to score in the 70s (the pros are sinking 5 footers 75% of the time, there nothing stopping you from doing the same, putting just takes A LOT of practice). Most amateurs young bros go to the range and try to bomb 300 yard drives thinking they're bryson dechambeau. Don't do that, practice smart.
As far as lesson, you'll need it. I do 1 lesson per year, ask the coach to give me 3 things to work on for the year, then I work on those 3 things. There's literally no reason to do more than 1 lesson a year, you need time to work on stuff. YouTube is free supplemental materials (Rick Shiels/Peter Finch/etc..., tons of good materials) $100 a year for 1 lesson is de minimis.
I play 30 or so rounds a year (live in NE with only 6 months of playable time) and spend most of my time at the course on the practicing on the green - my golf spending comes to around 3k a year, including snack/bevs at the course, not including costs for car/gas/etc...
Golf cost money, unfortunately.
Counter-argument: Throw out the clubs and get a Citori O/U or Weatherby SA-08 and pick up skeet and trap. Tell your group members to do the same.
