So I've been in NYC for quite a bit now but haven't come across any nice trip hop playing lounges / bars / clubs. Almost wanna pull my hair out at clubs / bars that play the same fucking top 40 music all the time. Basically I'm looking for a place that would play Massive Attack at least once a night. One reason I still haven't gotten over London.

Check out ResidentAdvisor. They sell tickets for shows in the lounge/downtempo/trance genres. These shows mostly happen in Brooklyn.
