Hey monkeys, This is a bit more political than some other posts on here but I thought you would find it interesting. Just recently, a Google engineer was fired for releasing a manifest commenting on the company's diversity and the employee's inability to discuss the various facets of diversity.
I recommend you all read a bit of the manifesto to get a good idea of what was said. Although I won't personally comment on any of the specifics, the main takeaway I had from the manifesto was that Google had established ideas about principles, such as diversity, that are not allowed to be discussed, yet should be discussed.
In the manifesto, titled "Google's Ideological Echo Chamber," the engineer argued that the search giant needed to be more tolerant of conservative viewpoints among its employees. Pichai agreed with that particular point, saying in his memo that the company could be more inclusive of different perspectives.
The employee was fired for portions of the manifesto that were deemed "not OK"
I'm curious as to what you monkeys think of this. Did firing the employee reinforce his statements regarding open discussion? Maybe you agree with Google's firing of the employee. Should discussions like this take place in the workplace on Wall Street or should this be left to tech companies and such?

Idk what workplace you work at where you can circulate an internal memo espousing your political views and be totally fine. My thoughts are i'm unsurprised.
If he published an essay decrying "sexism" on silicon valley, he would probably get to lead some 5$M diversity initiative within Google. If he would be fired, there would be a mass outrage among gender studies departments, huffpo, slate and other trash.
free speech protects you from the gummint, not your employer. also, just because you're free to say it, doesn't mean you're free from repercussions.
I heard Sundar Pichai ended his family vacation early to fly back to mountain view and deal with this issue. it was not taken lightly, but if they legitimately found something in the code of conduct, then yeah it's grounds for dismissal. will be interesting to see what path this takes in the courts.
