Greece Fires Civil Servants FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A CENTURY!

I haven't posted on WSO in a long time, but this headline just seemed so ludicrous that I wouldn't mind hearing some intelligent discussion about it.

For the first time in over 100 years Greece has begun to fire civil servants. Yea you read that right...IN A CENTURY there have been no civil servant firings. Equally telling is the line that mass firings have finally begun (as requested by the Troika) and they cite the TWO PEOPLE who were fired last week....haha

The two people were a dude that didn't show up to work for almost 4 months and a policeman that was stealing debit card numbers. HOW do you not notice someone just not showing up for 110 days? That shit can't sneak up on you to my knowledge.

Plus the PM says that they will rehire all the people they have lost (different people, but no positions made redundant). I mean, WTF? Greece isn't getting out of this mess anytime soon. (Even if they were able to devalue their currency they are obv not fixing any problems)

Austerity in the form of budget cuts is like putting a bucket under a leaky roof... it's a temporary fix and it shows that you're making progress but it's not an actual solution. What Greece (and a litany of other European nations) needs is actual labor reform. Firing people shouldn't be some yeoman's task, it needs to happen now and remain the status quo in Europe. Now to get that same mentality applied to public schools in the US...

"Yes. Money has been a little bit tight lately, but at the end of my life, when I'm sitting on my yacht, am I gonna be thinking about how much money I have? No. I'm gonna be thinking about how many friends I have and my children and my comedy albums."

Agreed, and many of the negative stereotypes about Greece seem to be about these civil servants who are JUST NOW getting laid off. And the sad thing is, the people getting laid off may just be the unconnected, rather than the most incompetent.

Reality hits you hard, bro...
